Conforming Delaunay Triangulation for Geological Structure with Overlapping Domains

  • When the fault zone of geological structure results in overlapping domain in 2D projection, special measures should be taken allow the application of the common approach of conforming Delaunay triangulation. In this paper, the concepts of bridge edge and fault zone loop are introduced to convert the overlapping domain into regular single-connected ones. Two algorithms called “domain subdivision” and “associated tessellation” are worked out to realize the conversion. As an example, the conforming Delaunay triangulation of reverse fault zone in 3D geological structure is presented. This approach may be useful for solving the problems in finite element analysis of mechanical parts with complicated configuration of cracks, composite structure with non-manifold interfaces and other applications.
