Abstract
This paper first introduces cellular automata and L-system used in graphics modeling, including natural scene, biological morphogenesis and other functional or aesthetic forms. Then we provide an overview of recent developments in evolving morphologies and controllers for virtual creatures in physically simulated three-dimensional worlds, and classify and compare different encoding schemes. At last we discuss aesthetics implication of artificial life and its significance to creating intelligent virtual environments.
