Abstract: A method to create various stroke effects with deformation patterns under the control of rules is presented.Stroke is defined as a pattern template （called stroke template）,and stroke effects are generated by deforming the template along paths.The paper puts forward three deformation restriction rules：position restriction,shape restriction and repeating restriction.By these restriction rules,user can control stroke deformation effects and realize “intelligent deformation”.As a non-photorealistic rendering technique,the method can be used in artwork design and pattern design for some industries,such as dyeing,ceramics etc.
