Abstract: Some color quantization problems concerning re-quantization of a color image into a few number of colors are discussed for the CAD of knitting，flocking，printing and dyeing as well as engraving a design on metal face etc．Anew clustering algorithm for color quantization is proposed．By this algorithm，not only overall style of the original image is kept，but also some features wanted by designer are still expressed in quantized images．The algorithm is simple and easily realized on the microcomputer．It has been successfully applied to the CAD system of knitting pattern for circular knitting machines．The algorithm is also important to the general color quantization problem．
