Abstract: The history, current status and future trends of sonification research, including perceptual study, tools and applications of sonification are outlined. Much attention is paid to the advantage of auditory perception over visual perception in human computer interaction and its influence on the choice of data-sound mapping algorithm. The pertinent technologies of sonification tools and applications are reviewed.
